Behind the Picture – Justa 10810

A Bit About Justa!

This is Justa! She is a 17 year old girl who lives in Mwanza, Tanzania with her mother. The sole provider for their family is her mother, a tailor.

Justa enjoys skipping rope, eating chapati and chips, learning the Word of God, and playing handball with her friends. Her favorite Bible verse is Matthew 7:7, and her best friends are Angel and Sumai. Justa aspires to be a teacher when she grows up because she loves helping people learn.

A Bit About Mwanza, Tanzania!

Tanzania is located in East Africa and is located in the African Great Lakes region. Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Justa lives in Mwanza, Tanzania which to the locals is also known as the “Rock City”. Mwanza touches Lake Victoria and is the second largest city in Tanzania with a population of 1,182,000 people as of 2021. Fishing is one of the most common occupations in this region due to its location. The climate is a tropical savanna with a wet season lasting from May to October and the temperature stay around 75 degrees year-round.

Most people in Mwanza rent a single room in a “squatter settlement” that lacks basic amenities like water and electricity. The homes are often made of brick, mud, and corrugated metal sheets. Mwanza has many inconsistent job opportunities where the pay does not consistently meet their daily needs. Due to the proximity to Lake Victoria, the population is rapidly growing resulting in a spike in crime, children being left on the streets, and the price of housing rising.

How to Pray for Justa!

  1. Please pray for the safety of Justa and her family. Pray that they would all know and love God.
  2. Pray that God would Give Justa a good life and that her family would be able to afford their daily basic needs.
  3. Pray that Justa’s mother would be healthy and continue her work diligently to provide for the family.
  4. Pray that Justa would do well at school and that God would lead her in every aspect of her life.
  5. Lastly, please pray that Justa would be sponsored and that she would be given hope through sponsorship. Pray that God would bring the right sponsor for her and that they would have a strong and lasting relationship. Most importantly, please pray that all of this would ultimately lead her to Christ.

A Graduation Story

It is our greatest joy to hear about the graduation of children out of our program. We know that they were diligent, persevered, worked hard despite the adversity they faced outside the walls of our CarePoints. Now they are coming out of the program wise and capable adults who love the Lord.

Our child sponsorship program makes a way for kids to have hope, instills self-confidence, and a sense of purpose. Most of the children in our program have not had the opportunity to read the Bible and know the Lord personally before coming to the CarePoint, yet they walk away with a knowledge and love for the Lord. Through sponsorship, they have the opportunity to go to school and get a good education, to break the cycle of poverty, vulnerability, and AIDS. These kids now have more opportunities and hope for a better future.

We have seen not only our kids but their whole families transformed because of the work that God does through Christ’s Hope. Families have had someone walking alongside them, helping them care for their children, giving support physically, financially, mentally, and spiritually. Broken families have found a new strength in Christ and our prayer is that they would pass that on to the next generations.

Here are some beautiful words shared from a girl who recently graduated from our child sponsorship program. We hope these words warm your hearts like it did ours.

“Hello my sponsors, I hope you are doing very well there in Florida. I am fine … I do not know where to start. I am who I am because of Christ’s Hope. I do not know as to where I would be if you were not there but what I can say is that all the glory belongs to Him who made me. You have now help me focus not on education only but to live a holy and perfect life. Being in Christ’s Hope helped me a lot. Christ’s Hope helped to show me direction to success… It was not easy, but the Lord God helped me. I am now able to proclaim what the Lord has done for me. I never fell sick or missed even 1 exam paper. This shows how much my redeemer lives. I miss seeing you so much and thank you for all you have done for me. Words cannot express as to how I feel but what I can say is that I am so grateful. May the living God bless you abundantly and never stop what you have done for me. You will be always in my heart forever and ever amen. Love you so much and take care of yourself and I will also do so. Saying goodbye hurts but anyway, bye!”

A Bit About Alisio!

This is Alisio! He is a 6 year old boy who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, and lives with his mother and two siblings. Alisio’s father left after his mother told him that she was pregnant and she has never seen him again. Alisio’s mother is currently unemployed but is sometimes able to do other people’s laundry for money. They rent a tiny back room in a shack that can barely fit a bed for the 4 of them to share in their room.

Alisio loves to play with cars, take his afternoon nap, and play on the jungle gym at his CarePoint. His favorite food is pap and milk and he is known for being shy and quiet. Alisio would like to be a policeman when he grows up to help protect his community.

A Bit About Johannesburg, South Africa

South Africa is located at the very bottom of Africa and touches the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. Most of South Africa is made up of flat lands and plateaus but also has some mountainous areas. South Africa is a very diverse place having 11 official languages and many more unofficial languages. Sadly, the poverty rate is very high in South Africa and children are often neglected for various reasons.

Alisio lives in the largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg. It sits in a large grassy plateau and has a low rocky area where water travels into the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. It is known as “the city of gold” because it was formed by a gold rush in 1886. The temperature is anywhere from the low 50s to high 70s, but it can occasionally go below freezing. Drought is common in Johannesburg as they usually only get a bit of rain in the summer months.

The homes in Johannesburg are very small and often made of brick or corrugated metal sheets. Sadly, lots of people are homeless in Johannesburg and are waiting and praying for housing.

How to Pray for Alisio

  1. Please pray for Alisio and his family members. Pray that God would use their hardships for His glory and their good.
  2. Pray that God would Give Alisio a good life and that his family would be able to afford their daily basic needs and keep them all healthy and safe.
  3. Pray that Alisio’s mother would find a good job where she is able to provide for herself and her three kids.

Pray that God would bring the perfect sponsor for Alisio and that they would have an amazing and lasting relationship. Most importantly, please pray that all of this would ultimately lead him to Christ.

The Mattress Campaign

Uganda recently hosted a local fundraising campaign that raised funds to provide mattresses for the children in one of our CarePoints in Uganda. After our CareGivers did home visits, they saw that most of the children’s sleeping situations were alarming. Very few children had a mattress, and many didn’t even have a blanket to sleep under. Most of the children just slept on a mat on the floor.

After seeing this, our CareGivers wanted to jump in and help so they started this campaign. The campaign started in February of 2022 and our goal was to raise enough funds for 150 children to have their own mattress. A mattress is roughly $22 US dollars in Uganda which is a big ask and yet we were blown away by the people’s generosity! Between the donations from church partners, friends, families, and local schools, they raised $3,835 US dollars which covers the cost for 175 mattresses. This made it so that every child and even the staff could have a brand-new mattress for their own.

We are so grateful for the people that make our campaigns possible. These $22 donations have changed 175 lives! Not only that, but it has also shown 175 people the love of Christ through their brothers and sisters in Christ.

There are many more children who are waiting for their lives to be changed!

A Bit About Sabina!

This is Sabina! This is Sabina! She is an 8 year old girl who lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and lives with her mother, aunt and three cousins. The homes in Kenya are usually made of mud or corrugated metal sheets and the terrain is typically very rocky and dry. 2. Pray that God would Give Sabina a good life and that her family would be able to afford their daily basic needs and keep them all healthy and safe.

Life Outside of the CarePoints

We continually talk about the children in our CarePoints and the things they learn, but we do not often talk about how we prepare them for life after they graduate out of our program.

We recently started what we call a, “Life Skills Program”, which is for our older students who are about to graduate out of our sponsorship program. These young adults are able to attend life skill courses where they learn different skills that will help them in their life as an adult and in the working world. The life skills centers teach them things like:

  1. Career opportunities: baking, tailoring, computer knowledge, taxi and motorcycle training, hair cutting and more
  2. Career guidance
  3. The importance of education
  4. Money management and savings
  5. Critical thinking, planning and problem solving

Here, the students are encouraged to start getting involved in a local church and to really make their spiritual life even more of a priority. We have seen many of them become members at a local church, join the church choir and even volunteer in many different ways. We are so proud of these young adults and how different their lives look from the generations before them.

The results are so encouraging for us to see. We have many students come out of the centers with good jobs, and new skills that will help them throughout their entire life. They have a new found confidence and can now feel prepared to support themselves and hopefully someday a family of their own.

When you sponsor a child, you are not only helping them while they are young, you are also giving them opportunities they may have never had before. They now have the ability to shape their life however they would like and to do something they are passionate about in the future. You are helping equip them for a secure a job, guiding them towards a good community, encouraging them to build a stronger faith that is their own and glorify God through it all.

There are many more children that need your help!

Behind the Picture – Don

Our “behind the picture” blog posts are a way that we can share more about the kids within Christ’s Hope and a little background on their history and life. We hope that through these blog posts you will be better equipped to pray for our children’s personal struggles and that one of their stories will touch you and ultimately lead to sponsorship and a child’s life being transformed!

A Bit About Don!

This is Don! Don is a 9 year old boy who lives in Nairobi, Kenya. He lives with his mother and two siblings after the death of his father. After Don’s father passed away, Don and his family were chased away from their home by his uncle because his mother wouldn’t marry him. The uncle took everything from Don and his family including the family business so his mother has been doing odd jobs for money.

Don loves playing football, ugali (an African porridge), and his best friend is David. His favorite Bible verse is Psalms 23:1 and he loves the story of Noah. He helps around the house by washing dishes and fetching water. Lastly, he is very happy and chatty in his CarePoint!

A Bit About Kenya!

Kenya is located in East Africa and is a very diverse place. It touches the Indian Ocean and is mostly desert, but it is also very mountainous.

Beryl lives in Kisumu, Kenya which is the third largest city in Kenya. The temperature is anywhere from the low 60s to high 80s and they experience both a dry and a wet season. How to Pray for Don!

  1. Please pray for Don and his family members. Pray for them as they have gone through such hardship and try to recover from it.
  2. Pray that God would help Don excel in his studies and that he would continue to learn and grow in school.
  3. Pray that God would provide a good job for Don’s mother. Pray that He would provide exactly what she needs and that he would provide enough money for their family.
  4. Lastly, pray that Beryl would be sponsored and that she would be given hope through sponsorship. Pray that God would bring the perfect sponsor for Beryl and that they would have an amazing and lasting relationship. Behind the Picture – Beryl

Here at Christ’s Hope, we get the opportunity to learn about our children’s lives. It can be extremely hard and overwhelming to hear some of the hurt that these children have had to go through and endure, but then other parts bring such joy and encouragement.

We want you to be able to see a little peak into these children’s lives as well! So we came up with the idea of “behind the picture”. This is a way that we can share more about the kids who still need to be sponsored and a little background on their history and life. We hope this is an encouragement to you all and so you can deeply pray for these children!

A Bit About Beryl!

This is Beryl! Beryl is a 6 year old girl who lives in Kisumu, Kenya. She lives with her grandmother because both of her parents passed away from different tragic accidents. Her grandmother is elderly but is still the breadwinner for this family. Beryl loves skipping rope, cornmeal with fish, and her friend Ann. Her favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 because, “It is the story of Jesus” and because, “He loves her”. She helps around the house by washing dishes and feeding their chickens. Lastly, she is very responsible and active in her CarePoint!

A Bit About Kenya!

Kenya is located in East Africa and is a very diverse place. It touches the Indian Ocean and is mostly desert, but it is also very mountainous.

How to Pray for Beryl!

  1. Beryl has specifically asked that you all would pray for her to be healthy and for her to do well in her studies.
  2. Please also pray that Beryl wouldn’t be disheartened by her parents deaths, but that God would use this tragic situation to bring Beryl closer to Him.
  3. Pray that Beryl’s grandmother would continue to be strong and that she would be able to continue to care for and provide for Beryl and anyone else in the household.
  4. Beryl doesn’t have proper bedding, so please pray with us that the Lord would provide warm sheets and blankets for this little girl.
  5. Lastly, pray that Beryl would be sponsored and that she would be given hope through sponsorship.
