Behind the Picture – Don

Our “behind the picture” blog posts are a way that we can share more about the kids within Christ’s Hope and a little background on their history and life. We hope that through these blog posts you will be better equipped to pray for our children’s personal struggles and that one of their stories will touch you and ultimately lead to sponsorship and a child’s life being transformed!

A Bit About Don!

This is Don! Don is a 9 year old boy who lives in Nairobi, Kenya. He lives with his mother and two siblings after the death of his father. After Don’s father passed away, Don and his family were chased away from their home by his uncle because his mother wouldn’t marry him. The uncle took everything from Don and his family including the family business so his mother has been doing odd jobs for money.

Don loves playing football, ugali (an African porridge), and his best friend is David. His favorite Bible verse is Psalms 23:1 and he loves the story of Noah. He helps around the house by washing dishes and fetching water. Lastly, he is very happy and chatty in his CarePoint!

A Bit About Kenya!

Kenya is located in East Africa and is a very diverse place. It touches the Indian Ocean and is mostly desert, but it is also very mountainous.

Beryl lives in Kisumu, Kenya which is the third largest city in Kenya. The temperature is anywhere from the low 60s to high 80s and they experience both a dry and a wet season. The homes in Kisumu, Kenya are usually made of mud and/or corrugated metal sheets and the terrain is typically very rocky and dry. The children within our CarePoints in Kenya rarely have electricity or running water in their home, so they have lots of long walks to the nearest well, or other water source, and in any type of weather.

How to Pray for Don!

  1. Please pray for Don and his family members. Pray for them as they have gone through such hardship and try to recover from it.
  2. Pray that God would help Don excel in his studies and that he would continue to learn and grow in school.
  3. Pray that God would provide a good job for Don’s mother. Pray that He would provide exactly what she needs and that he would provide enough money for their family.
  4. Lastly, pray that Beryl would be sponsored and that she would be given hope through sponsorship. Pray that God would bring the perfect sponsor for Beryl and that they would have an amazing and lasting relationship. Most importantly, please pray that all of this would ultimately lead her to Christ.

Behind the Picture – Beryl

Here at Christ’s Hope, we get the opportunity to learn about our children’s lives. It can be extremely hard and overwhelming to hear some of the hurt that these children have had to go through and endure, but then other parts bring such joy and encouragement.

We want you to be able to see a little peak into these children’s lives as well! So we came up with the idea of “behind the picture”. This is a way that we can share more about the kids who still need to be sponsored and a little background on their history and life. We hope this is an encouragement to you all and so you can deeply pray for these children!

A Bit About Beryl!

This is Beryl! Beryl is a 6 year old girl who lives in Kisumu, Kenya. She lives with her grandmother because both of her parents passed away from different tragic accidents. Her grandmother is elderly but is still the breadwinner for this family. Beryl loves skipping rope, cornmeal with fish, and her friend Ann. Her favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 because, “It is the story of Jesus” and because, “He loves her”. She helps around the house by washing dishes and feeding their chickens. Lastly, she is very responsible and active in her CarePoint!

How to Pray for Beryl!

  1. Beryl has specifically asked that you all would pray for her to be healthy and for her to do well in her studies.
  2. Please also pray that Beryl wouldn’t be disheartened by her parents deaths, but that God would use this tragic situation to bring Beryl closer to Him.
  3. Pray that Beryl’s grandmother would continue to be strong and that she would be able to continue to care for and provide for Beryl and anyone else in the household.
  4. Beryl doesn’t have proper bedding, so please pray with us that the Lord would provide warm sheets and blankets for this little girl.
  5. Lastly, pray that Beryl would be sponsored and that she would be given hope through sponsorship. Pray that God would bring the perfect sponsor for Beryl and that they would have an amazing and lasting relationship. Most importantly, please pray that all of this would ultimately lead her to Christ.

Finally Meeting!

Finally, the Lord made a way for some of our Christ’s Hope staff members to meet face to face!! In March 2022, these ladies were able to meet each other and bond as co-laborers for the Lord with Christ’s Hope. They were so grateful for time to get to know each other and bond. They hope to be able to meet again soon!

We ask you to pray for every one of these ladies. Pray that God would give them strength, wisdom, patience and grace. Pray that He would use each of them in amazing ways to bring Him glory! Pray especially for Evelyn as she begins her ministry in Tanzania where there has been no Country Team Leader for years and there is much work to do.

*Left to right Sthe (HR from e-Swatini), Evelyn (new Country Team Leader in Tanzania), Rachel Namale (Country Team Leader in Uganda) and Rachel O. (Country Team leader in Kenya).

Why is Christ’s Hope Different?

There are many different organizations similar to Christ’s Hope… So, what makes Christ’s Hope different?

There are five main features that makes the Christ’s Hope program unique.

We strive to keep children with their families (whether that is a parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparent) and in their communities. We do this so that each child will be with a loved one and will be able to take what they learn at their CarePoint and spread it to those around them.

We focus on the child/sponsor relationship. We do this via communications and the opportunity to visit your sponsor child!

Your sponsor child is given much more personalized care due to the more intimate child to caregiver ratio (12 to 1). Our caregivers check in on their group of children very regularly and have a continuous growing relationship with the child. Caregivers even do child home visits to know exactly what each individual child’s family and home life look like and what their biggest needs are.

Just like the special relationship a sponsor has with their sponsor child, entire churches can have that same special bond with a whole CarePoint of children being sponsored by your church! We don’t only partner with individuals, but churches to open up and fill up sponsorships for individual CarePoints! We are very thankful for our church partners!

We focus on the AIDS Affected, orphaned, or vulnerable children. Many organizations solely focus on children that are orphaned. At Christ’s Hope, we hope to help children in all vulnerable states.

Here at Christ’s Hope, we try to do things as God and as the Bible would instruct us to do. We long to help the widow and the orphan and those in need. But we can’t do it alone… We need your help!

International Director’s 2022 Trip to Africa

By Numbers

  • 4 Ministry Countries visited (DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania)
  • 3 Mobilization Countries visited (Germany, Netherlands, and England)
  • 10 Team Members (representatives from USA, UK, Netherlands, Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania)
  • 27 Ministry CarePoints visited
  • 140 Staff Members met with
  • 2,000+ Children Impacted

By Specifics

  • Training With the Staff: Reviewed global activities, strategic plan, program ideation, HR manual rollout, listening sessions with staff, Life Center Development, and other discussions, meetings, and planning in regards to overall ministry.
  • Opportunities for growth: We spent a lot of time discussing the local vision for each country and ministry. We looked at the areas of growth, the need, how we can serve better, and smarter ways to do so. It was very encouraging to hear the visions and see the plans and ideas that our leadership team has developed. For example, they plan to grow the Ministry Center in Nairobi from 150 to 500 children in the next few years.  In Uganda they are moving into a nearby slum area with a large population of people in extreme poverty. In doing so they will be able to reach 300 more children and expand our teen program (Life Center) to better prepare our teens vocationally, spiritually, and socially for adulthood.

Personal Experiences

  • Highs: It was a blessing to re-engage with our staff and children face to face, hearing their testimonies (and singing!), and seeing our work through the impact it has in children’s lives. We interacted with and watched our amazing staff really love these children, showing them Jesus. There is a lot of joy, even through the challenges.

  • Lows: We saw the many children who need help that we are not reaching yet, were reminded of the incredible poverty and struggles our children come from and experience, and met many children who have lived through traumatic life events (parent(s) and siblings deaths, neglect, and abandonment).  I can’t lose sight of the complexity and messiness of this work. Also, a challenge was that I contracted COVID while in England, and spent time quarantining before I could return home.

The Biggest Blessing

We walked the child Becky and I sponsor home one day through a very rough slum. It was a long walk. People would stare/glare at us, but when I greeted them, I was encouraged by the sudden change in their countenance as they would smile and greet us back. When we met our child’s family- (many children!), the grandma who cares for the children shared about how thankful she was for her children being in our program and the change it brought to their family.  As we chatted with the grandmother and she shared, she would laugh and her laugh was so contagious! I thought, “Here I am in this desperate ‘dangerous’ slum, with people I would think are so discouraged and down trodden and yet there is amazing laughter and life here, even in one of the most challenging places I’ve probably ever been.”  God is moving. Children and families are being impacted.

Sincerely,

David Kase

Our History

Where It Started (2003)

In a small Namibian town, Jos and Sylvia Holtzhausen felt called to confront the troubling reality of HIV and AIDS they were witnessing first hand and the children left behind in its wake. They felt the call to launch a ministry that focused on HIV and AIDS affected children and families. In answer to that call, they established Christ’s Hope International which cared for AIDS-orphaned children through orphanages.

Orphanages Close (2005)

Berdian and Juliet Beukes became “House Parents” in one of the Christ’s Hope children’s homes in Namibia for 3 years. As they realized most of the children had a family member alive to take care of them, they closed down the orphanages and told the family members, “If you can look after this child at night, make sure they are safe, the child can come here to the Ministry CarePoint where we’ll help with school work, give them meals, and teach them about Jesus.”

Passing the Torch (2019)

After 15 years of dedicated service to the Lord and His mission, Jos Holtzhausen has stepped down from his position as International Team Leader of Christ’s Hope. The title and duties of International Director have been appointed to David Kase, previously US Director. Norm Prange is the U.S. Director of Finance and Operations and Joe Marton Directs the Fund Development team.

Christ’s Hope International Today!

Christ’s Hope International empowers orphaned and vulnerable children to break the cycles of extreme poverty, AIDS, and spiritual brokenness through family-based care and discipleship in Jesus Christ. We are so thankful to announce that through Christ’s Hope’s program, 2,000 children are being cared for in 41 CarePoints across Africa!

What IS a Ministry CarePoint?

If you stay up to date on our blog posts and emails then you likely hear the term, “Ministry CarePoint” used often… but what exactly IS a Ministry CarePoint?

A Ministry CarePoint is a strategically located center within a community that has a high AIDS infection rate. Our Ministry CarePoints provide a place where sponsored children can receive the material and spiritual care they need. In doing so, this ensures that orphaned and vulnerable children can live with an extended family member or in a foster family.

A Ministry CarePoint is usually made up of a large building with many small rooms where the children can be taught. Ministry CarePoints also have a small kitchen and an area for the children to eat. Sponsored children are able to go to the Ministry CarePoint three times a week and benefit from these things.

Within the Ministry CarePoint are Care Givers and there are roughly two Care Givers for each class. They teach the children Bible lessons, look after the kids while they are at the Ministry CarePoint and even make sure that they are doing well at home. They give emotional support, counseling, and are really able to create a bond with each child.

There are many things that go on within each Ministry CarePoint:

Educational:

Age-appropriate schooling

Tutoring and remedial assistance

Access to educational tools and vocational training

Teacher’s assessments and progress evaluations

Physical:

Safe family environment

Nutritious meals

Ongoing medical evaluations

HIV testing and monitoring

Hygiene standards education

AIDS awareness training

Home evaluation monitoring

Spiritual:

Evangelism and discipleship

Bible study and prayer

Personalized counseling

Genesis design sexual purity training and instructions

Emotional:

Counseling and mentoring

Ministry CarePoint Outcomes:

The Gospel is shared and received, and lives are committed to honoring God and sharing the Gospel with others.

Monitored physical development and annual physical exams ensure long-term health for children

Children grow up to break the cycle of AIDS and poverty in their communities.

Where it All Began

In a small Namibian, Africa town, Jos and Sylvia Holtzhausen faced a burdening dilemma. Should they continue confidently serving Youth for Christ Namibia, reaching hundreds of west African youths at the large center they had established; or confront the troubling reality of HIV and AIDS they were witnessing first hand and the children left behind in its wake?

Sylvia was reading the book, “Get Out of the Boat”, about the parable of Peter stepping out of the boat by faith to walk on the water toward Jesus.  They had many years of effective service and were comfortable and fruitful with Youth for Christ, yet they felt the call to get out of the boat they knew, to launch a ministry that focused on HIV and AIDS affected children and families. In answer to that call, they established Christ’s Hope International in 2003.

Since 2003, Christ’s Hope has grown from serving in one country, to seven. Today we serve over 2,000 AIDS affected orphaned and vulnerable children. Helping these children remain in families through our Ministry CarePoint model, which provides support physically, academically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially.

Clean Water Sustains Life

David and Becky Kase recently went on a trip to Africa to visit many of Christ’s Hope’s CarePoints. Becky shared many stories from their trip, but these were a few of her sweetest memories from their time there.

“Water. When we are in this hot and dry land, we drink lots of it. In Africa we become more aware that clean water sustains life. Typhoid is a big problem here and we are hoping to get our children immunized against it once the new vaccine is made available.

We came up with a game using what the care points had on hand and the kids loved it. Many of them have the responsibility of hauling water to their homes as few of our children have running water. Here we see this child does have “running water”!

She continued to share the following story as well…

“In Uganda we had the most time to really get to know staff and some of the kiddos. They made this craft and we discussed how they are each made uniquely and one of a kind. We sang a song that they sing so well… ’I am fearfully and wonderfully made…’”

We hope that you are all just as encouraged by these stories as we are! We love to see and hear the things that are going on in Africa and within our CarePoints firsthand and we love to share the work that God is doing there with you. Please continue to pray for the children, their families, their communities, and our staff!
