What God Did in 10 Days: Our Team’s Kenya Journey

We’re back from 10 unforgettable days in Kenya, and we can’t stop thinking about all that God did through this trip—because of you. Your prayers, support, and generosity made this experience possible, and we are so excited to share the story with you.

Day 1 – The Long Road to Kenya

Twenty of us—from teens to those in their 60s—traveled over 25 hours from Detroit through Paris to Nairobi. By the time we arrived, we were exhausted but bursting with anticipation for what lay ahead.

Day 2 – Mathare Ministry CareCenter: Smiles Amidst the Struggle

Our first full day was at Mathare Ministry CareCenter, located in the heart of one of the largest slums in the world. The children and staff welcomed us warmly with songs, hugs, and joyful chaos—and even offered pastries and tea! We split into groups to teach foundational truths about the Gospel and God’s love, did crafts decorating t-shirts, and played games until our cheeks hurt from laughing so much.

The children at Mathare face challenges most of us can’t imagine, yet their laughter, energy, and warmth filled the CareCenter, showing us the beauty of hope and resilience. Outside the CareCenter, families live in tiny, crowded tin shacks, with narrow streets sometimes running with rivers of sewage and debris. Seeing this reality made it all the more clear how much of a safe haven the CareCenter is—a place where children can simply be kids, free to laugh, play, and feel loved.

We also visited several families in their homes, praying with them and seeing firsthand both their struggles and resilience. That day left us so full, and we were sad to only have one day at Mathare before catching a flight to Kisumu.

Day 3 – Rest, Reflection, and Community

After travel, we spent a slower day recovering and adjusting to the time change. The morning included worship at a local outdoor church, filled with singing, teaching, and joy. The warmth of the congregation made us feel right at home, and it was inspiring to worship alongside them.

Later, we visited a local market, supporting families and learning more about the community. One shop owner even shared stories about her child who attends the CareCenter—what a special connection to make!

Days 4–6 – Becca Prange Ministry CareCenter: VBS, Friendship, and Fun

Arriving at Becca Prange Ministry CareCenter was like stepping into a bright light of God’s love. The CareCenter now serves over 250 children and features classrooms, a library, art and talent rooms, a kitchen, sports fields, and working bathrooms. Some of Becca Prange’s family joined us to see the ministry built in her honor.

We spent three incredible days leading VBS:

  • Day 4: “The Gospel – Who Jesus is and Why We Need Him”
  • Day 5: “What Happens When We Trust in Jesus – Salvation and Our New Life in Christ”
  • Day 6: “Becoming Like Jesus – Glorification”

Each day was filled with crafts, games, sports, songs, and so much laughter. By Day 2, the children were running to hug us, laughing at our freckles and wrinkles, and little ones napping in our arms—safe, secure, and loved. We bonded deeply with the kids, especially those we sponsor, and it was a joy to see their faces light up.

A special highlight was time in the art class, where children shared what they’d been working on and used donated art supplies. We decorated t-shirts, learned pastel chalk techniques, and even had a massive water balloon toss—definitely a team favorite! Through generous donations, each child also received a new pair of shoes, which brought endless excitement.

Day 7 – Community Celebration & Sponsorship

We hosted a community event with over 500 attendees—children, their families, siblings, and friends—a rare and beautiful opportunity to bring everyone together in one space. The day was filled with worship, testimonies, a sermon, and performances by the children, including dances, art presentations, and a memorized poem. Families shared a meal together, laughter and conversation filling the air, as the children proudly showcased what they’ve been learning at the CareCenter.

Two alumni also shared their stories, speaking passionately about how Christ’s Hope and their sponsors transformed their lives. Both are now excelling academically and preparing to attend university in Nairobi—an achievement that is exceptionally rare for children growing up in these conditions. Their testimonies were a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of sponsorship, the hope it brings to entire families, and the extraordinary potential God nurtures in these children.

After the celebration, we visited the homes of our sponsor children—a time that was deeply emotional, beautiful, and unforgettable. Many families live in tiny mud huts, often sharing a single bed among all the children. Walking into these homes, seeing the hardship and brokenness, and yet witnessing the hope and love that radiates despite it all was a powerful reminder of why Christ’s Hope exists.

We brought each family cooking oil, rice, and flour, simple but meaningful gifts that helped meet their immediate needs. We prayed with them, encouraged them, and shared in both tears and laughter, experiencing firsthand how sponsorship changes lives and brings hope to entire families. By the end of the day, 12 children found new sponsors, an incredible answer to prayer and a tangible step toward brighter futures for these children.

Day 8 – Safari Adventure

No trip to Kenya is complete without seeing the raw beauty of God’s creation. We spent the day in the Maasai Mara, spotting giraffes, elephants, zebras, lions, hippos, and more. A sudden thunderstorm at the end of the day made the landscape even more dramatic and awe-inspiring. We stayed overnight, reflecting on the trip and marveling at the work God is doing through this ministry.

Day 9 – Farewell for Now

Heading to the airport, our hearts were full. It was bittersweet to leave, but we were so grateful for every hug, laugh, and lesson shared. Even in just 10 days, God changed our hearts as much as the children’s lives were impacted.

Reflections

From CareGivers to cooks, drivers to staff, the children to the alumni, every person we met reminded us of God’s faithfulness. Their joy, dedication, and love left a mark on our hearts. Even in a short time, we were reminded that this ministry is life-changing—not just for the children, but for everyone who serves alongside them.

We are beyond grateful for your support, prayers, and generosity. Every smile, every laugh, and every lesson was made possible because of you. Thank you for being part of this journey.
